Little Wing is husband and wife team, Gareth and Gillian MacLachlan – growing and producing Syrah and Marsanne from their site on Waiheke Island. They found the abandoned vineyard and property in 2014 and got to work resurrecting the vineyard, reviving what was salvageable and re-planting new areas. The vineyard is a natural bowl shape with steep slopes of heavy clay, a multitude of different aspects and sun exposures and is influenced greatly from the ocean with sea spray drifting up through the vines.
In order to respect this unique site, the close-planted vines are all hand-worked, managed organically and the wines are made with as little intervention as possible and bottled with minimal sulphur. The ultimate goal is to let the grapes, vintage and site express themselves in the finished wine.
